The Ducati 900 built Super Sport after the emergence of the first 750 GT, sport, and Super accordingly opposed to contact sport Desmo twin-cylinder machines with round motor housing, the Japanese competition. The Ducati management had recognized this problem and urgently needed a super sporty motorcycle that would declare war the Japanese Maxi bikes with their over 750 cc.
 
"Initially decided Ducati build one rather? touristy" laid-out of the bike. The 860 GT designed by Giudiaro met but unfortunately not the public taste. Due to the simultaneous success with the wonderful 750 SS Desmo decided to take the company from Bologna a sportier version on the market. That was then the 900 Super Sport.
 
The 860 engine was a further development of T designed for the 750 GT originally-90 ? two-cylinder engine. What was new was the design of the motor housing now had a rechteckigere form.
